“Big Data” is the latest bandwagon to hit the trail, with vendors bending their product portfolios to get the term “big data” into their marketing spiels. But, what is big data really – and what are the options for dealing with it?

In this engaging session Clive Longbottom, Quocirca, provides a clear explanation of what big data is (and what it is not), thoughts on typical implementation approaches and suggestions for how the industry will develop.

Clive is founder and head of research for Quocirca. He trained as a chemical engineer and spent years working as an IT user, seeing at first-hand the problems that can be introduced through implementing technology purely for technology’s sake. To try and counter this, he moved in the IT space, working in various roles to implement systems that truly added value to a business and gave the flexibility for a business to define its future, rather than changing its processes to match what the technology could manage.

As an industry analyst, he worked first for META Group (now part of Gartner) and then started Quocirca 12 years ago. Their aim is to provide advice on technology in context with business needs, rather than just following the latest band wagons of technology fads. Their web site is at www.quocirca.com
