TSI seeks to improve the trustworthiness, reliability, dependability, and security of software developed in the UK. It is a cross-sector, public-private partnership remitted to “Make Software Better”, by creating a framework to underpin the development of software according to best practice. One important aspect of TSI is an encouragement of the teaching of secure software development in universities. Both BCS and IET have offered support for such a development, which has recently been launched nationally after a three university pilot during 2012-13.

Ian Bryant is the Technical Director of the TSI. His role is based at the Cyber Security Centre (CSC) at De Montfort University (DMU), where he is on academic attachment from the Ministry of Defence. He is also involved in a number of national and International Information Security committees, including chairing the UK National Information Assurance Forum (NIAF), being Deputy Chair of BSI Panel IST/033/-/4 (Information Security Controls) with lead responsibility for ISO/IEC activity in Architecture, Cybersecurity, Incident Management and Software matters, and contributing to The European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s Methods for Testing and Specification (MTS) Security special interest group.
